Okay I just edited this post which originally was a reply to spam.

So we have two HUGE ponds here with quite alot of wildlife. You might have seen my post about a duck not too long ago which was hurt.

We have giant bullfrogs, lots of fish.

Now what struck me as ODD was seeing these giant goldfish. I'm assuming these are koi? Now the question I have for you is don't koi need to be warm in the winter? Are these fish going to die?

Edit: Fixed the topic title, changing coi to koi.

OH yeah, I don't think it would be easy for these fish to be captured for warm storage in the winter either?

Gold fish are nothing more than carp. I would imagine they could survive in a large pond if the whole pond doesn't turn to ice. Hmmm interesting question though. I know here people have to remove there goldfish from their outdoor ponds, of course these are the small man made ones which would freeze solid unless they were heated (that would cost a fortune). I'll have to do some digging into this. I'm not sure how much special care a koi needs since they are just the fancier goldfish, oh and expensive too! lol Did I ramble enough? hehehe I'l try to look into this later.

I don't think it freezes through, but still they need more warmth then the pond provides I'm sure.

Oh, sorry it's spelled koi?

Yep, it's spelled Koi.

Ohhhh my bad, Koi are not goldfish! Goldfish are distant cousins of Koi.

From a fact sheet about Koi in ponds:

Koi can withstand a wide range of temperatures, however sudden changes in temperatures are not good for them. Koi can survive under the ice in extreme cold as long as the water does not freeze solid. Koi will not move around or eat much if the pond water is very cold.

I found that little tidbit at this site:

Thanks! So they should be okay?

I'll try to get a pic from my phone, but haven't seen them in awhile.

They should be ok if the pond is large enough and the temp doesn't drop suddenly.

Koi are cold water fish .. As long as the pond is deep enough that it wont completely freeze they'll be fine, just like WingedCat says. Yippie.
