Our (rather clingy) cat, Billy, who has been with my fiance for about five years is very put out by the arrival a few days ago of our new kitten, Fudge. Fudge would love to play with him, but Billy keeps sulking in the backroom and then going out and won't talk to us at all when Fudge is around. Anyone got any suggestions how we can get them to socialise before Billy packs his bags and walks out on us?? :(

Welcome on board rosepelal! :)
All I can say is give them some time. There are cats that never accept other
cats. When we bought this house there was a cat living on the roof. Turned
out that my neighbor owned the mother and raised the litter. She kept that
cat and her brother. Her brother ran her off and never let any cat near him,
he'll fights them all.
We need a cat whisperer!!!
Anyways, pay more attention to him, give him extra treats and keep the new
kitten away from his favorite spots. Maybe, hopefully he'll come around. Is
he fixed? It did make a difference in my male cat, but not the neighbor's cat.
I NEVER encountered a cat like that before. So territorial!
But if Billy choses to leave instead of fighting, that's a good sign.

Billy's been fixed but Fudge is only a baby - vet says he can be done just before Christmas. They're both boys so I think there's a lot of testosterone going round... Billy's never been much of a fighter anyway, he just clings!!

That's good that he is a sweety. Give it another week and you might be
surprised. When I introduce a new cat it takes about 2 weeks before they
stop hissing at each other. Lately we have many strays coming to eat here
and my cats take it slow to make friends, but eventually they get along or
at least tolerate each other.
5 years is a long time to be the only cat.
