View Full Version : Poor Kasper in Jail

Here's the story, in short:
My dog was seized yesterday because I was an idiot and thought he had a 3 year rabies vaccine and it was a one year... so this neighbor kid (who's very scared of my dog I guess) doesn't have the sense to go to the SIDE door after seeing my dog is out front and she CLAIMS to have been bitten. On my lawn with my dog tied up.
So 6 or 7 more days til I can get him back, and BTW the girl was not taken to a doctor and we keep seeing her using both hands and no marks outside... hmm. Sorry, I'm just pissed.

Wait a second, that's not right! I don't know the laws in particular but wouldn't
it be logical to have a doctor determine if the girl was bitten and THEN take
action and put your dog in quarantine if her skin was broken? Wouldn't she
need medical attention even if it's a tiny puncture wound? What IF your dog
has rabies..she'll die in 24 hours or something.
Do you happen to know somebody that's a lawyer or something you could
ask for advice? That's just not right. If somebody would accuse my dog of
doing something like that on MY property, I would first sue the kid and her
parents for trespassing and DEMAND to see a medical statement that says
she was indeed bitten, before I would allow my dog to go through something
traumatic such as being separated from us for 10 days.
Something smells fishy here.

The Police seemed to be more on our "side" but weren't very good about giving us information about the kid.
When I brought up that it was our land and it was basically tresspassing the cop replied, "she's only 9 years old" insinuating that she doesn't know better being a child.
As far as rabies animals can be quarantined before treatment on a human since it takes 2 times longer in a human.
The good news is even the cop says I should fight the ticket and will probably win. However Kasper is paying for this. I still don't think he bit her, I think he may have jumped up and his nail scratched her.
Two days previous her and her brother came to our door, my dog (doing his JOB) barked and growled at the window and saw the girl bolt out of the front yard and hide in the street. That seems related to the "bite" I think, in showing how well she does with dogs.
BTW I wasn't thinking when I posted this here, it probably is better off in the Off Topic area? If so sorry, please move it.

You know, in Germany we have signs, like street signs, everywhere you can
see. They say "No Trespassing! Parents are responsible for their children
and will be fined".
Just recently they took the signs down, because it's common sense!
If the kid is too young to figure out that you don't walk up to a dog on
somebody elses property, then they can't let her out alone, period.
As far as rabies animals can be quarantined before treatment on a human since it takes 2 times longer in a human.
That is incorrect. The human needs to start with the series of shots WITHIN
24 hours or it's too late.
As you can see this pisses me off almost as much as it did you. That poor
dog.
Na the topic is ok here. How's your parakeet coming around?

Actually the rabies shots have to start only when the biting animal cannot be located for testing or quarantine itself.
Yes, and as emotional as my dog is.... ugh.
Keeter is doing well, he's starting to get used to us but still moves away when we get near the cage and talk to him. He's loving the big cage and loves tweeting to the other birds outside the window (when I can I put him against the open window).

Just 2 more days til we get him back.
When he returns he's getting more walks, more treats and more training.
Going to pick up a choke collar and train as best we can utilizing Cesar's techniques and we do have a training (shock) collar for worst case scenarios.
Again this is NOT due to the alleged bite but because he's in need of more attention and training.

Well, I *thought* I was going to post a welcome back to this thread..
The humane society kept saying "sure, you have to get a pre-paid rabies reciept then you can pick him up" and we talked about today, Friday.
Well I called as they said I should do to see if the Vet did the last check on the dog. They then get back on the phone and say "the Vet will see him Saturday, you can pick him up Monday" I'm taken aback!
I said no no.. *I* was told by Animal Control the quarantine is from the day of the bite so today is the day. They replied they would call the health dept. and call me back. Still no word.
My poor dog might get EXTRA time? What the hell is going on with this world?
Anyone have an old cannon I can buy and aim at my neighbors?

That really sucks man! I know what it's like at the shelters, but still no excuse.

lol that cannon would be PERFECT!
I went to get the prepay rabies today, then the shelter was a block away so I went to check. TOMORROW I can get him.
Nevermind I work 3rd shift and won't be able to sleep Again lol
So close!

Wow! I can't believe that is happening to you, Michael. :( I find it unfortunate that dogs seem to get into so much more trouble than other animals. If it had been a cat that had bit her, it would have been brushed off. But since it's a dog, oh no, all hell must break loose. ><
I'm not trying to bad-talk cats, lord knows I love them very much. I just don't appreciate the blame put on dogs. Especially in such an unfair case as this one.
I hope Kasper gets home safely soon, without too much trauma!!

I agree big time. Honestly we go a bit too far with rabies yes it's still out there but it's becoming rare and who knows it might never come back... someday.
In perfect circumstances I would think no pet would need the shot even, except then again what if it got bit by something rabid (again, rare chance).
So UPDATE:
Kasper is home, he's a bit nervous. He was hyperventilating when he saw us. The people at the shelter were very friendly, I think they had spread word around about the circumstances with Kasper! One worker said, "yeah I couldn't believe what he was here for, and then I heard what happened and shame on those people" lol
I'm considering finding a part-time job there Mon - Wed while my kids are in school (next month) but if not I might volunteer too. It's just with the new loan I need another job.
So Kasper is here and doing well. He's lying down and we're going to take him out for a long "Cesar" walk soon.
I've given him Mahi-mahi and some turkey that my mother saved for him (she's been here visiting for 2 weeks). He's still a bit unsure but we'll get him back in the swing of things!

Oh yeah, I'm going on 7 hours sleep now in two days... but I'll be fine lol
What I'll do is after work in the morning I'll sleep until 5 PM, then stay up a bit and take some Nyquil.
Oh and I think I found a great Vet for Kasper now, the appointment is Monday. I won't go back to the first one, I don't like how they handled this situation when I opened my big mouth to tell them what happened.

Here's the first picture since his return. Mind you it's the camera phone since Tina broke our regular camera.

Okay so just ten minutes and he's now:
No longer jumping up on people
walking alongside me
not paying attention to a neighbor dog (hyper puppy) that he lunged for before

Thanks :) I have to look at it as a learning experience. It's sad that the dog had to sit there 11 days for my stupidity especially considering he didn't even do it (I'm 99.99999% sure he didn't).
The good thing about dogs is they don't dwell, they move on. He's happy to be home and seems very happy he has more structure with our training (Dog Whisperer type).
