Are you sure he is dehydrated? Did you do the skin test? How many seconds
does it take for the skin to go back to normal?

Could be lack of blood sugar..make him this:
1 cup of water
1 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons sugar
I'm sorry hun..it can be lots of things. Don't even think about starting to
blame yourself, ok! You don't know what all happened to him...

The vet said he wasn't as bad as I thought. I still have my doubts. It seems he crashed awfully fast. He is still very droopy and lethargic. I have started him on pedialyte, and the vet started him on sub qu fluids. He sent home the fluid, needle and instructions. Kyle is an EMT, so he is handling that part for me. The vet mentioned low blood sugar too, and told me to give him some karo syrup to perk him up and then give him a bottle. He is still constipated, and I gave him a soapy water enema (as instructed by a vet on Tuesday). He got out some, but he is really straining and crying like it hurts him. I have been mixing the yogurt into his formula. I just don't know what else to do.

Ok, I guess we have to go to extremes. Fill a bowl with warm water and put
him in there up to his chest. Rub the belly for ten minutes and just stick with
the Pedialyte and yoghurt..NO formula. Pedialyte has given all animals I
gave it to diarrhea eventually. Make sure he doesn't get chilled.
If that hasn't worked in a couple to 3 hours, get small dose of liquid paraffin
or a feline laxative. I was going to suggest an infant laxative, but I'm not
sure if that would work. Many human meds we give our dogs can be deadly
for cats, so we gotta be careful.
I NEVER had a kitten in all the hundreds I raised with such constipation..which
makes me wonder if his insides are all they should be, you know what I
mean? How long has it been now? And how much is a little bit? Strike the last
questions, I guess that's too hard to explain lol.

We just gave him the second round of sub qs. He doesn't seem much improved. I simply can't get him to drink much at all. He had about 5 swallows of formula right before we went to the vet. I got about 2 eye droppers of pedialyte into him, but he won't drink the pedialyte yogurt mix. The pee is a little lighter is color, but not much. I soaked him in a sink of water, which he didn't mind too much, and blow dried him ( he seems to like that). He hasn't pooed much even though I gave him that other enema at 6. He got out some, at most I have ever gotten have been some hard balls about the size of a grain of barley. He hasn't eaten hardly anything since 3, though I keep trying..... :(
I have been thinking about he whole 'insides not working' part too. Maybe he has a defect and his mom abandoned him...

I know how you feel hun..I lost around 60 animals this year already..from
about 80, including my 8 year old Husky that I helped out of his mother's
womb. My dad passed away the same day..weird as that is.
I stopped grieving and blaming myself about 3 years ago. It didn't change
anything. I gave them a chance and since I'm not God or something, I have
no power over life or death other than doing the best I can and know.
It's pretty simple because this is the naked fact.
That doesn't mean I am ice cold and de-sensitized, I learned to accept and
instead of beating myself up, I try again with the next animal until I get the
rare one that makes it. And that's is the moment when I remember why
I'm doing this. I have done my part messing up this planet and I will give
back as much as I can, one bird, one squirrel, one kitten, one little animal
at a time.
I got to get off that philosophy pot here lol. Sorry, but I like to share this
just in case. If he doesn't make it maybe you can use my experience to
make it easier. You will run into more animals that need help..I got the
feeling!
I really hope he makes it though!!!! I'm root'n from Texas!

I read this thread on Rupert when one of our kittens got sicked early March this year. This thread is really helpful & we managed to keep the other kitten from dying.

We didn't realize that one nite the mother cat brought the kittens to sleep downstairs. It must been cold downstairs. So the next morning, one of the kittens looked pale & died later in the afternoon. I've no idea at all whether the kitten suffered dehydration. It was unexpected & too sudden. But luckily I found this website & tried my best to keep the other kitten, Junior from dying. I followed every instruction here & brought her to the vet. Actually she was doing very well until recently, she had problems to defecate. I did rub her belly with oitment but it still didn't work. Even after seeing the vet, she still had the problems. Actually she's supposed to see the vet today if the problems still occur after 3 days. That's really sad! Of course, as long as there're cats & kittens around, we're going to go thru' this again & again.

Hmmm now that does sound odd. Tell me, where do you live? What country?
If you are in the US or Canada, what kind of food did you use? How long did you have them?
I've had many many many kittens die because they had diarrhea, but never because they were constipated, because there are so many things you can do to get that bowel moving.
However, you did the right thing by taking Junior to the vet, this way you aren't even tempted to feel guilty, because if the vet doesn't get it, how should you, right? Makes the sadness go away a lil faster :).

Hi MissDolittle, thanks for responding. Actually I'm living in Msia. We feed our cats including kittens with pet canned foods.
I do find this odd too as many of our kittens died bcoz of diarrhea. I just found out that Junior had a swollen anus that explains why she had defecation problem. I believe Junior was getting weaker bcoz she fell from the porch for 2 times.
MissDolittle, just in case in future I've a kitten with swollen anus. Can I rub the anus with ointment? Back home we've sea cucumber ointment that can heal cuts, wounds etc faster. It works on human & I believe it does the same on animals.
