Since I live in Brazil, our yards get the odd creature you would only find in a pet store. So here is a picture from a few months back of one taking a break from his natural habitat and teased my dog. Enjoy:

Yep, Iguanas, these are all over here having been introduced by the pet trade. Veggie eaters and an occasional bug. Very few people actually know how to keep them as pets, diet is crucial to avoid MBD (metabolic bone disease). just Diets of lettuce and fruit are killers of iguanas, something many pet shops used to advise ignorant owners to feed. A mixed diet of calciun fortified greens = collards, mustard greens or kale, along with yellow squash, zuccini and 10% fruit chopped and mixed so the iguana does not pick out the fruit only(like children do). Calcium powder should be mixed in as well for a happy healthy Iggy
Awesome pics, Brazil has some awesome herps including a couple species of iguana. The black Spiny Tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura similis) is one of my favs Last edited by Bear : 12-31-2009 at 04:35 PM. |
